Roger Ballen was born in 1950 in New York but has lived and worked in South Africa for almost 40 years. His work as a geologist led him to the countryside, where he took up his camera and began exploring the small hidden towns in South Africa. At first, he explored the empty streets in the glare of the midday sun, but once he had made the step of knocking on people’s doors, he discovered a world inside these houses which was to have a profound effect on his work. These interiors with their distinctive collections of objects and the occupants within these closed worlds took his unique vision on a path from social critique to the creation of metaphors for the inner mind. Ballen’s work explores the human psyche, featuring marginalised individuals, animals, and found objects within constructed or found environments. Ballen's career has spanned over five decades, evolving from documentary photography to creating fictionalised, psychological reals. He is known for his distinct photographic style that is both surreal and unsettling
