A self-taught aspiring Designer and Creative Director, Khumo Morojele bought a sewing machine right after high school, and with that began his journey and career as a fashion Designer. Khumo is not only inspired by the vibrant creative city of Joburg and the community of young creatives he is a part of - but his initial love for fashion and clothing comes from experiencing his mother running her own womenswear Turkish boutique as well a her introducing him into thrifting in Johannesburg. It always starts from the love of thrifting and that trickles down into me making an up-cycled piece or sharing different pieces with my friends - just that whole foundation and circulation of clothing - around friends. family and design, is what I love most about my relationship with fashion. My mom introduced me to thrifting in town when I was younger and having that interaction and way of bounding with her made me love clothing even more. From there I realised that I can do my own thing - even better. I had to make do with what I had and that ties into sustainability. Making something beautiful out of nothing has always been part of how Black people have made life and culture throughout history, and the celebration of Black people and experiences. through fashion, is an extremely important part of Khumo's design practice. The projects Khumo has been involved in, along with the collaborations he has been a part of, have greatly influenced the output and trajectory of his fashion practice, which he says has changed dramatically since he started on this journey. With his designs, Khumo is currently focusing on exploring and experimenting with new and innovative approaches using sustainable methods, where the idea is expressed through photography, film and the virtual world. within all of this change and experimenting with different forms, what has remained unchanged is the conceptual space and integrity Khumo's work is anchored in.
