Born in 1982 in Viljoenskroon, Freestate Kobus grew up on a farm near Klerksdorp where he matriculates in 2000. In 2001-5 he studies at Pretoria Technicon (TUT), majoring in Sculpture and Ceramics. His final-year work explores Labour within the South African context through Figuration. In 2006 he moves to Cape Town, to set up a foundry with fellow artist Egon Tania, whom he periodically assisted on projects. He works from this studio in Woodstock and between 2014-19 he runs it as a commercial foundry. 2021 He sets up a dedicated studio in Observatory to focus on his personal work. A prolific and versatile creator, la Grange has turned to cast bronze, welded steel, ceramics and fire sculpture as avenues of creative output however he remains most strongly connected to the tradition of woodcarving. The human figure is the primary subject of his work, the abstraction of the figure as theme emerges in recent work. Utilising waste wood is a primary aspect of his practice. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions 2007-pesent and has held 4 solo exhibitions in South Africa 2014/15,19, 22 and one in Belgium 2018. Works are in numerous private and corporate collections locally and abroad.
